Passport renewal timelines in 2026 depend on which processing track you choose and how you submit your application. Whether you're planning ahead or working against a travel deadline, here's what to expect at each tier and how GOV+ can help move things along.

Standard and Expedited Processing Times

The State Department offers three processing tracks for passport renewals:

  • Routine (mail): approximately 4-6 weeks, not including mailing time
  • Expedited (mail, +$60): approximately 2–3 weeks, not including mailing time
  • In-person at a passport agency: same-day to approximately 3 business days, for travelers with documented travel within 14 days (or within 28 days if a visa is required). An appointment is required, and proof of travel must be provided.

What can slow it down:

  • Applications involving name-change documentation, high submission volume, or required file reviews may take longer.
  • Passport applications or renewals can take longer during certain seasons. Demand is higher from late winter into summer, which can increase the processing time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does passport renewal take in 2026? Routine mail applications take approximately 4–6 weeks, but can take as long as 12.

If you need a passport faster, expedited service is available using one of our GOV+ Courier options, and receive your passport in as little as 3 business days.

Can I expedite my renewal if my trip is coming up soon? Yes. If you need your passport faster, GOV+ courier options,  available through its subsidiary Premier Passports LLC, a registered passport courier with the U.S. Department of State, can get your application into the right hands quickly, with delivery in as little as 3 business days. What does passport renewal cost in 2026?

Standard fees for renewal:

  • Passport book (Form DS-82): $110–$140
  • Passport card: approximately $30
  • Book + card together: add approximately $30–$40 on top of the book fee
  • Expedited service (optional): $60
  • 1–2 day return shipping (optional): approximately $20–$30

GOV+ charges a separate service fee. Government fees apply regardless of how you file.

Does using a filing service speed up my renewal?

It can. A filing service like GOV+ reduces the risk of errors that cause delays or rejections, and GOV+ courier services can fast-track delivery of your application. The State Department's processing time is set by the track you choose, but an error-free, properly submitted application is less likely to hit avoidable delays.
